Wisteria pulls much of its influence from pop, jazz and progressive rock music. This inspiration takes form through catchy melodies, heavily extended harmony, emphasis on groove, and a complex pallette of meters. Out of the gate, the piece introduces a gentle, but dense multi-voice texture and the main melodic motif in the soprano voice. From there, the work expands on the early motives in a fever dream of quick moving sections, shifting meters, and increasingly eccentric harmony - all culminating in a colossal restatement of the beginning phrase. Frequently, grounded phrases are broken down in order to make room for new ones, and melodic fragments are broken down and interwoven into the texture in new ways.
